“Civil War in Clarksville – Invasion by River and Rail”

Tour will be led by Civil War Historian Greg Biggs

Please mark your calendar for our Annual Members Meeting scheduled on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. CT at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center, Clarksville, Tennessee. We are excited about the Middle Tennessee Preservation tour planned which will be held immediately following the Annual Members Meeting. Clarksville, a communication and transportation center, was strategically significant during the Civil War because of the Cumberland River and the Memphis, Clarksville and Louisville Railroad. Three forts on the Cumberland River, Forts Donelson, Defiance, and Clark protected this pro-Confederate town and many of Clarksville’s residents rushed to join Southern military units.

The tour, “Civil War in Clarksville – Invasion by River and Rail” will be led by Civil War historian Greg Biggs who has led several Civil War tours and spoken to Civil War Roundtables and other historical groups across the country.

Greg has been a student of military history for over 55 years from the ancient Greeks through today. His concentrations are on the Revolutionary War, Napoleonic Wars, Civil War and World War Two as well as military colors of the 18th and 19th Centuries.  He has spoken to Civil War Roundtables across the country, as well as other historical groups, conferences, SCV camps and World War Two Roundtables, and has led numerous battlefield tours and U.S. Army Staff Rides of the Fort Donelson Campaign, Tullahoma Campaign, Atlanta Campaign, Chickamauga/Chattanooga Campaign and Where The River Campaigns Began.

He is the Military Staff Ride Facilitator for Fort Donelson National Battlefield and has been published in several Civil War publications on aspects of the war including battle flags.

He has also consulted with and researches for a number of museums, auction houses and relic dealers nationwide.

He has been a researcher for noted Civil War authors including David Powell, Eric Wittenberg, Ed Longacre, Gordon Rhea, Wiley Sword, Larry Daniel and others.

Greg has won awards for his historical work from the Montgomery County, Tennessee Arts & Heritage, Milwaukee Civil War Roundtable and Chicago Civil War Roundtable.

Greg lives in Clarksville with his wife Karel and their three cats, all of whom have Civil War cavalry commander names.

The tour will cover 1 mile of walking over mild to moderate terrain. Appropriate walking shoes and attire recommended. Tour length: 2-3 hours.

More details regarding the preservation tour will be sent closer to the date of the meeting. Priority registration will be given to members of the Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association and Clarksville Civil War Roundtable.
