Advancing towards Knoxville, on November 14-15, 1863 two Divisions (Brig. Gen. Michah Jenkins and Maj. Gen. Lafayette McClaws) of Maj. Gen. Longstreet’s Confederate army crossed a pontoon bridge on the Tennessee River at Huff’s (Hough’s) Ferry. On the evening of November 15, the Confederates encountered and skirmished with Union forces of the Army of the Ohio (Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside) at Lenoir’s Station. The engagements would eventually lead to the siege of Knoxville, November 19-December 4, 1863.
