Jackson-Forked Deer River

July 13, 1863
Madison County

On July 13, 1863 detachments of the Union Second Cavalry Brigade (Col. Edward Hatch) attacked Confederate Cavalry near Jackson Tennessee where Confederate forces controlled 13 bridges over the Forked Deer. Hatch drove the Confederate cavalry from the bridges back into Jackson where Forrest’s
forces occupied two forts. Following an engagement of 5 hours and several charges by Hatch’s cavalry, the Confederate cavalry retreated from Jackson toward Trenton. Union losses were 40- 50 killed and wounded with Confederate casualties estimated to be three times larger.
