In an attempt to disrupt shipping on Cumberland River two brigades of Confederate cavalry commanded by Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler attacked the Union garrison at Fort Donelson on February 3, 1864. Wheeler withdrew following heavy losses and lack of ammunition.
