Dorothy Kelly Named First Recipient of Preservation Award

Dorothy E. Kelly Receives Fred Prouty

 Tennessee Battlefield Preservation Award

TCWPA Vice-President Dr. Anthony Hodges, accompanied by Fred Prouty, presented TCWPA’s first Fred Prouty Preservation award  to Dorothy “Dot” Kelly at the Blue and Gray Reunion and Freedom Jubilee banquet on May 1, 2015 in Knoxville.    The award is named in honor of Fred Prouty, long time program director of the Tennessee Wars Commission, who was responsible for preserving more than 7000 acres of Tennessee battlefields and historic sites during his 26 years as a state employee.   The award recognizes individuals who have worked to preserve and interpret battlefields on a regional or statewide basis.

Hodges commended Dot’s extraordinary accomplishments as an advocate for preservation, a leader in preservation groups, a researcher, writer, lecturer and project volunteer.  “Dot has inspired not only the Knoxville community, but preservationists across the state with her knowledge, commitment, and boundless energy,” Hodges said.   A charter member of TCWPA and past president, Dot has presented programs throughout the country and conducted extensive research on the East Tennessee Civil War experience.   In addition to giving many hours of volunteer work on sites in Knoxville, Dot has stood before local government on numerous occasions in defense of the preservation of Civil War Sites.

Dot designated the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable Preservation Fund as recipient of the award’s accompanying grant of $750.00.
