NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association (TCWPA) is proud to announce that the American Battlefield Trust has been awarded a $2,000 preservation grant for land acquisition at Shy’s Hill in Nashville. The Union assault at Shy’s Hill on December 16,1864 in the Battle of Nashville played a decisive role in the defeat and ultimate retreat of the Confederate Army of Tennessee.
“On behalf of TCWPA’s Board I am pleased to award this grant to American Battlefield Trust for this important Civil War battlefield preservation project.” said Anthony Hodges, President, TCWPA. “We also applaud the efforts of the Battle of Nashville Trust, acting as a local partner in saving this important piece of Tennessee’s Civil War history,” Hodges also noted.
TCWPA’s preservation grants are funded through generous annual gifts from our members and proceeds from the “Save Our Battlefields” specialty license plate. Since 2005, TCWPA has awarded more than 60 battlefield preservation grants totaling more than $106,000. President Hodges said, “The preservation grants empower preservation groups and communities across the state to preserve their Civil War history for future generations, ensuring that Tennessee’s Civil War stories continue to educate and inspire future historians and preservationists for years to come.”
TCWPA was founded in 1994 as part of the Tennessee Wars Commission’s efforts to address battlefield preservation in Tennessee. TCWPA became a 501(c)3 non- profit organization in 1997. TCWPA’s mission is to protect, interpret and make accessible Tennessee’s surviving Civil War battlefields and contributing landscapes for the benefit of present and future generations.
