On April 2-4, 1864 a Union reconnaissance under the command of Brig. Gen. Thomas Wood scouted the valley between Powder Springs and Rogersville to determine the position of Maj. Gen. James Longstreet’s Corps that had moved north into Virginia.

On December 27, 1862 four companies of the 4 th Michigan Cavalry engaged Confederate forces at Stewarts Creek Bridge on the Nashville
