On July 13, 1863 detachments of the Union Second Cavalry Brigade (Col. Edward Hatch) attacked Confederate Cavalry near Jackson Tennessee where Confederate forces controlled 13 bridges over the Forked Deer. Hatch drove the Confederate cavalry from the bridges back into Jackson where Forrest’s
forces occupied two forts. Following an engagement of 5 hours and several charges by Hatch’s cavalry, the Confederate cavalry retreated from Jackson toward Trenton. Union losses were 40- 50 killed and wounded with Confederate casualties estimated to be three times larger.

Following three days of engaging Confederate Cavalry numbering about 1,000 men commanded by Col. Jacob Biffle, 250 men of the
