As the Right Wing of the Union Army of the Cumberland advanced from Nashville on December 26, 1862, it made contact with Confederate forces, mainly Gen. John Wharton’s cavalry brigade at Nolensville. The Confederate cavalry fought a delaying action before retreating south to Knob Gap. The fight at Nolensville opened the bloodshed of the Stones River Campaign.
