On the afternoon of May 2, 1864 the 2nd New Jersey Cavalry encountered a brigade of Nathan Bedford Forrest’s cavalry near Bolivar on the south side of the Hatchie River.  Following a severe fight of two hours Forrest’s cavalry was driven from their trenches and retreated across the Hatchie River.  After destroying the bridge the Confederate cavalry passed through Bolivar in a southeast direction.  The 2nd New Jersey lost 2 killed and 10 wounded in the action.
